The Journey

I had several goals for 2013, some of which were met. Some were adjusted along the way. Others were not met at all. Through amazing experiences and some failures, I learned some things and hope to take all of my 2013 running (and recovering) experiences with me into 2014. Here's a look back at my 2013 Goals and how they turned out. 

2013 Goal 1/MARCH: Complete my third Half Marathon: the Reston Half Marathon. Do not come in last, PR. 

What I'm proud of: The training was perfect. I'm Hal Higdon's biggest fan. I'm proud of myself for sticking to the training plan through winter. I made an early decision to do all of my weekday runs on a treadmill for the first time ever. It ruled. Once I adjusted to the treadmill (I had very little running experience on a treadmill before this training began), I loved it. I really enjoyed being in lightweight clothing and running inside during darkness and especially on icy days.  When race day came, I felt ready to go, despite a nagging little pull in my right foot. The race was a blast. I was so happy to race with my friends Tricia  and Tora  and the vibe of the race was great. It was one of the few that my husband has been able to attend, along with my running partner Matthew, and my friend Alyson - what a cheering party! What was wonky: I did not PR. No, no, no. Reston is no Annapolis. I'm going to have to run a really flat course to beat my race at Annapolis.  What was really wonky: I did not know at the time that I was running on a broken foot. 

2013 Goal 2/SEP: Run two Half Marathons in one week, PR the first one, run in a tutu at the second one. 

What I'm proud of: I learned a couple of weeks after signing up for these races that I had a broken foot and was subsequently put in a cast for 8 weeks and I still managed to run both races. The first one was the Chicago Half and I ran it with my little brother Mike. We met in Chicago for an Epic Brother/Sister Running Weekend and we had a total blast. The race was amazing.  We also ate and drank our way though the awesome city of Chicago. The second race was Diva's Wine Country Half in Leesburg, Virginia. I met up with my friends Tricia and Tora and Shirley and met (for the first time "in real life" several other women from my virtual running group, My Running Girl Friends. If there are any female runners out there who are interested in joining this international running group, leave a comment below and I'll give you details.  I wore a costume (yes, a tutu) which was a definite first for me. I have this "thing" with costumes and running: if you're going to wear one, you had better be confident and good! These are two feelings I struggle with in my running and thus, I didn't feel "worthy" of the tutu. This is, I realize, completely ridiculous. I know that now. I joined tons of women in costumes who ran a really really tough course after a huge start delay and despite having raced 6 days before, I felt great. What was wonky: Nothing really. I didn't PR Chicago but mofo, I thought I would have to walk portions of the race because of my foot and I managed to run the whole thing with a smile on my face. That race was so so so fun. It's flat too. With a longer training period, I could have raged. I love Chicago and hope to run that race again one day. It's so huge that logistically it's a little scary, but they do a good job and running with thousands and thousands of people is such a boost.  Diva's was a total blast. There were logistical nightmares but I think because it was my second race that week, and I knew I was just there to have fun, that the start delay and the major error in course description didn't really bother me. I loved running an (almost) all female race and though it is my very very slowest Half Marathon, it was also the one during which I laughed and smiled the most. 

2013 Goal 3/OCT: Crew my running partner at the Boulder 100

What I am proud of: Mostly I'm proud of Matthew, for running a freaking hundred miles. Also: I'm proud of myself for staying up for 33 hours, for being a pretty good crew captain, and for pacing Matthew for an unexpected 26 miles. What went wonky: Not too much. There were no emergency errors and the things we forgot or could have done better were relatively minor and have been added to the crew list for the next one. At Bull Run 50, I was fastidious about recording splits. At Boulder 100, the course was a loop, and there was an official checking times at each completed loop and half loop, so I wasn't paying as much attention in the middle of the night and instead went off the "official" times. This is a story for my Boulder 100 race report, but suffice to say, it will not happen again. The race was a life changing event. To watch people run 100 miles through day and night, is shocking and beyond impressive. To have a crew of Jeff and our friends Sandy, Dayna (and her girls) and Matt made the race so much fun. Having Matthew's coach Tim  there saved us from questioning anything - his wisdom and hilarious personality combined with a lifetime of athletic experience made the race go from surreal to achievable. Having all of the support from everyone I mentioned made the race so awesome.  What went really wonky: Besides nearly murdering a race official for mis-counting Matthew's number of loops completed, I didn't realize that while pacing, I had somehow broken my foot again.      

2013 Goal 4 / NOV-DEC: Fuck the long runs, and speed up! Choose 2 5K races. Use the first for a base pace and use the second as a measurement of improvement. 

What I am proud of: I worked hard on speed and cadence. I started using a metronome. I had NO idea that my turnover was so slow. I started getting faster! I definitely respond well to speed training and feel like I'll be able to get so much faster with some more training. What went wonky: I learned shortly after the 100 that my foot was re-fractured so I went back into the boot. I missed my first race. Just about the time I started running again, I got the flu and missed my second race. So much for the 5K. Maybe it's not my distance after all?   

Weird year. Fun, for sure. I had a blast running with my running partner and friends. I learned to run faster for a short period of time. I learned to run for fun. It was a frustrating year as well. Lots of broken foot time. I learned about taking time off to heal. I learned about cross training (cycling and yoga are my new go-tos and don't bother my foot). I learned patience. I learned to stop when something feels really strange. I learned about humility. The irony is that after all the time that I diligently spent in the cast and boot, I have a feeling that I've been mis-diagnosed. That's something to figure out for 2014, after I look at races and think about distances and make a running plan. I hope we'll be able to run together next year!

Running with the Souls of the Dead

One point two miles into my run, I arrive at the Rodin sculpture. Every time I run by it, I wonder how it came to be there. Though I don’t typically stop, Rodin and his beautiful piece of art stay in my mind long after I’ve run by.  

I wonder, who were Elizabeth Musgrave Merrill and her daughter Sally Hicks Croswell, who’s remains lie beneath the gorgeous sculpture of a mother holding her child? How did it come to be that Auguste Rodin would sculpt a gravestone for the Merrill family in Middleburg, Virginia?

The cemetery becomes my own private Musée Rodin, taking me back to such a special place in Paris. I recall trips to the Rodin Garden, and the quiet happiness I have felt there, surrounded by sculptures and manicured hedges and lawns, offering stone solitude in a huge city filled with joie de vivre, the joy of life.  

As I run on through the Middleburg cemetery, as well a respite from a bustling village, the gravestones become beautiful sculptures in their own right. As I run up a small rise, there are Civil War gravestones set in a circle surrounding a monument, there are horses and a dragon, and sculptures of small creatures alongside more traditional headstones, many of which show faded sentiments of loved ones young and old.

I loop through the inside of an iron gated fence and then again along the outside of the fence, beside the lake, always noticing gravestones that I had not seen the week before, completing my quiet ritual as I run along reading the names of the dead.

It doesn’t take religion or a belief in afterlife to feel the souls of the dead. Though some might say feeling the souls of the dead automatically qualifies a person as having such a custom or belief. Perhaps it’s the history that I feel. Perhaps it’s the beauty and quiet of the cemetery. There’s a feeling of comfort here, which makes no conscious sense as the idea of placing bodies in the ground offers no solace to me from a practical standpoint.  

I run alone, and when I enter the cemetery I find myself looking for the familiar graves, of “people” I now know by name. It is a sculpture garden, with each sculpture featuring the soul of a person long gone but able to be honored as I run by. I wonder about the level of respect, or lack thereof, a person shows by running through a cemetery. I’ve come to the conclusion that because it’s a meditation of sorts for me, that hopefully it’s the former.

Just outside the main gate, I turn left and run along a stone wall on Federal Street. On the backside, a row of gravestones are embedded into the wall.  They stand close together, lined up as sentinels facing the church, which was founded in 1847.  Too many gravestones to count, I run by thinking of them as a group, though I don’t know who they were or how the wall and graves have now become interlocked. I run back into the village, back into the world of the living, leaving the Rodin and the Civil War soldiers and the animal sculptures and all of the others, and I feel the peace of knowing that they’ll be waiting for me to visit them again on my next run.

Running with the Bulls: A Tale of the Bull Run 50

I set out gear and clothing for the morning, each piece carefully having been decided upon weeks before. Race days are not the time to try out new things. Stress is relieved by knowing in advance what gear you’re using. By planning ahead, you don’t have to think about anything other than the race on race day. But here I was, second guessing myself. Nerves were getting the best of me and I had to tell myself over and over, do not deviate from the plan. You’re ready for this. You’ve prepared. You can do this. It was 9 hours before the start of the Bull Run 50 and I was revved up with fear and stress and excitement and terror.
Just hours before, Matthew and I had attended the pre-race meeting. We were both trying to stay calm, and even though Matthew is, by nature, a much calmer person that I am, I sensed his anticipation too. Here we were, two unseasoned runners amongst a sea of Virginia Happy Trails Club veterans, people who had run the Bull Run 50 over and over again, people who eat the Bull Run 50 for breakfast.  Old and young, they all seemed to know each other. They delighted us with stories of the race and its history. At some point the RD said, “It’s not a question of if you’ll puke, it’s a question of when you’ll puke.” I turned to Matthew and said adamantly, “He’s crazy. You will not puke.”  It was my job to instill confidence in Matthew. I would tell him he would not puke. And the next day, I would tell him he looked great when he did puke. It was my first ultramarathon crewing job and I was determined to do whatever it took to get my runner across the finish line.  
The Bull Run 50 is a fifty mile race on single track dirt and gravel held in Northern Virginia in April, and if Mother Nature is in a good mood, blue bells bloom along the course, creating a sea of flowers that runners cruise through in the forest along Bull Run and the Occoquan River.   
The first challenge is getting into the race. Only 350 runners are given a spot each year, based upon winning lottery numbers chosen due to their proximity to a particular day’s DOW Jones Industrial Rate closing number. Or something like that. By the time I had read the lottery explanation several times, I had gone cross eyed and decided to let them and my fingers remain crossed in the hopes that Matthew would be chosen. I did not have a back up race in mind and neither did he.
As luck (or the stock market) would have it, Matthew was chosen and here we were, he with 6 months of training under his belt, and me with 6 months of reading every crew instruction to the point of memorization, along with every race report I could find, paying particular attention to what runners mentioned about their crews, and a healthy dose of adrenaline, ready to race.
I dropped M off at Hemlock Overlook (no crew allowed at the start) in the pitch dark with a shout of good luck and headed off to find my crewing partner, Alyson. We met up at Starbucks, fueled with espresso and headed to Aid Station 7.2/11.6: Centreville Road.
When you crew a race, RDs give you detailed instructions on where you can and cannot go, when you can and cannot aid your runner and other helpful hints. The instructions for Centerville Road Aid Station are as follows: “Access to this aid station is difficult and dangerous. We recommend that crews skip this station.” OK. Danger. If we skipped this aid station we wouldn’t see Matty until mile 21.5, which was 1.5 miles longer than he had ever run in his life. Shit. We headed to Centreville Road, survived the entry and parked out of the way so we would not bother anyone at the aid station. Before we knew it, Matthew was in and out of the aid at mile 7.2, in the front of the pack, and headed out and then back to us for another stop there at mile 11.6. We switched out his fuel (a combination of maltodextrin and water) and hit the road.
Alyson and I met up with Matthew’s parents at Bull Run Marina, Aid Station 21.1/44.9. I had spent the day with them at The North Face Endurance Challenge the year before and was happy to see them. Matthew’s mom was eagerly anticipating her son’s arrival at 21.5 with a typical mother’s concern and his dad was puffed out to “here” with pride that his son was running a 50 mile race. M came rolling into the aid in the same group as before, looking pretty good, albeit a bit tired. He sat down with us and took a longer break than we had planned for but he eventually ran on down the trail and we moved on as well.
Next stop was Fountain Head Park, Aid Station 28.1/37.9. We waited and waited and started to see familiar runners coming in and then in came Matthew, running up to me with the words breathlessly pouring out of his mouth, “I-just-puked-four-times-and-diarrhea.”
The job of a crew is to get their runner across the finish line. Pacers can do it in a more physical manner, by actually running with the racer, but crew meets the racer at each (allowed) Aid Station and offers him or her a series of previously planned out items, like a fresh fuel bottle or hydration pack, some food, first aid, a change of shoes or clothing. Crew also writes down splits, and gives the racer a run-down of exactly what has been happening with the race since the last aid station. “Here is your time, you’re doing awesome. These runners are in front of you, this guy just dropped, the next section has 2 small hills, the next aid station is 7 miles from here, and you look AWESOME.” You get the picture. Crew always tells the racer that he looks AWESOME. And that he is going to be just fine. And that he is doing GREAT. No matter how the racer is doing, and no matter how he actually looks, unless he is literally going to die, the crew will always tell the racer that he is doing just great. And then it’s the crew’s job to push the racer out of aid as quickly as possible.      
So. Here we were at mile 28.1. Eight point one miles further than Matthew had ever raced before and he, by his report to me, despite still looking strong, was internally depleted, dehydrated and weak. OK. I was prepared for this. I took him by the arm and said the magic words. I pulled out the trump card, gave him the golden ticket, the magic medicine of ultra running, “Coca-Cola.” 
It was at this point that something unanticipated happened. You learn things from every race. You learn that you cannot know every single thing that will happen ahead of time. You have to be able to anticipate the unexpected and react in real time. I definitely did not anticipate that while assisting my runner, his mother and my crewing partner would turn into mama bears, attempting to shield their cub from the evils of the world. Simultaneous to my utterance of the word that would fix all that ails, “Coca-Cola,” Matthew’s mother started muttering that he should quit, while Alyson started talking about how Coke is very bad for your health. Both of them were hovering in close proximity to Matthew. This could not be. Both were new to crewing. Both were probably in some world correct in their commentary and with their concerns. But neither are ultrarunners. Neither knew the rules: No quitting except in the case that death is impending, No arguing against the crew chief, No negative comments in front of the runner. Even if he is your kid. Even if you are a personal trainer and know correctly that Coke is not *the best* health drink on the planet in normal life.  I had made an error in not listing out these rules before the race began. I won’t do it again. You learn something at every race.
I had to act quickly. Seeing one’s mother fret about you is not good for a racer’s mentality. Getting a health lecture is a distraction that won’t assist in completing the race. I gently took Matthew’s arm, led him away from his mother and Alyson, and whispered to him again, “Coca-Cola.”

People who don’t understand ultras don’t understand ultras. Hell, people who do understand ultras sometimes don’t even understand ultras. So of course my racer’s mom was going to flip out when her kid was reporting body breakdown with 20+ miles to run. Of course Alyson, who is a personal trainer and writes about world health issues for a living, would want Matthew to consume only the best of things during his race (and always).

The body can do and take a lot. And I knew that the likely reason Matthew’s stomach had freaked out was because he had eaten too much or he had eaten the wrong thing. It didn’t necessarily mean that he had to stop running as long as he wanted to go on. And he did want to go on. Hopefully just meant that we had to get something into his system to get him through the next 20 miles. Enter the savior: Coke. It works. It offers calories and sugar and a little bit of magic. Especially if it’s a little flat. Take a poll of everyone you know who has competed in anything longer than a 50K and I am guessing you’re going to get a 99% Yes to Coke response. Matthew drank some Coke, and we filled a handheld half way with it as well, and sent him along with another one filled with water.

We waited patiently for his return at the Aid, which he would double back to at Mile 37.9. He came back before too long and looked good again – no problems and with a quick stop, continued on. I was happy to see him looking strong and to see so many now familiar faces cruising through 37.9 One more aid station to go and he’d be on his way to the finish.

We drove back to Bull Run Marina and set up our crew station at the Aid Station Mile 44.9.  Mid-pack runners started coming in. To put it mildly, it was a shit show. I remember feeling shock at seeing some of the runners’ faces as they hobbled into 44.9. The lightheartedness of the 37.9 Aid was gone. The last bit of trail into 44.9 was “up” hill (so mild you would not even think of it as a hill on a regular day) and we watched runner after runner struggle to the top. Matthew came in and took a seat at our little station. We helped him get refreshed and talked about the next 5 miles. “Everyone is looking really strong, including you.” I said. “You are doing great. You are doing awesome. I know you’re tired, but that’s understandable, and you are going to rage the last 5 miles.” He wanted to sit a little longer. (Who wouldn’t, man? 44.9 miles is a long bike ride even.) “You have to go now. If you want me, or your dad or Alyson or someone to go with you, OK, but either way, you have to go now.” It’s tough to be a best girl friend and want to hug a person so hard and at the same time know you cannot do that, and that you have to tell him to GTFO ASAP.  Guess what? Off that badass mo fo went running into the woods.

The finish line at Bull Run 50 is a party. There’s a band, there’s BBQ, there’s beer and there are a TON of people. It’s really exciting and people cheer like crazy for every single finisher that crosses the line. It’s a festival of ultrafamilies. Matthew came running out of the woods and down the hill to the finish line looking AWESOME. I didn’t have to make it up. He really did look GREAT. He finished his first 50 miler with a big huge smile on his face.  I was smiling as well - for him and for myself – I had proudly finished my first ultra that day too.

Skanky Apples

Have you ever thought to yourself at the same time, "I really need to go running," and "What am I going to do with these skanky apples?" Yeah, so did I, this afternoon, during our first consistent drizzle snow of the year, the day before Thanksgiving, about an hour before dusk. So, I did what you probably would do: I googled "use old skanky apples" and then made a plan. 

1. Pile on a bunch of winter running gear: Hoka One One Bondi B's (which are still my favorite to the Kailua Tarmacs), Smart Wool pink striped knee sox, New Balance pink and black tights, black Champion running skirt, purple Performance 8 high neck pullover, pink and red Athletech fleece and pink and red Amsterdam hat, and black gloves from The North Face. It's a pretty excellent outfit, if I do say so myself. Any of these companies are more than welcome to contact me about sponsorships.  

2. Grab a running pack: My choice is the Mountain Hardware Fluid 6 pack that I borrowed from my roommate Matthew, who got it at Geoff Roes's amazing running camp in Alaska. I took the water bladder out of the pack so I would be able to fit my groceries. By the way, Geoff's blog is and from Matthew's stories and breathtaking photos, I can definitely say that if you're interested in a challenging and rewarding running adventure in Alaska that also includes great food because Geoff is a great cook too, you should try to attend one of his camps.  

3. Head out to the grocery store: On foot. Yes, this is where the running part comes in. Run to the grocery store. If you don't live within a few miles of a grocery, drive to the grocery and start your run from there. Run before you shop. 

4. Walk around the grocery store like you don't look weird in your winter running outfit. Move quickly so you don't cool down too much. Buy your ingredients.  

5. Pack everything up in your running pack. I needed every single ingredient except the apples (actually I didn't need the butter or the cinnamon, but I got them anyway, so 1B. should probably be "Review recipe and check your pantry and refrigerator so you can make a list of ingredients that you need rather than buying extra stuff that you have to run home with). (Incidentally, I give myself extra points for having to run back with the butter and cinnamon - with the added weight I probably burned 25 more calories which makes up for the extra $4 I spent). So, into my pack went: All Purpose Flour, Brown Sugar, Butter, Cinnamon, Steel Cut Oats. That pack can hold quite a bit of stuff.  

6. Run home. You get the bonus of having the weight of the grocery pack on your back which is great practice for trail running where you're usually carrying more water weight and/or food and gear. Congratulations on running to and from the grocery store. You are a genius, you are saving the planet, you are helping your heart and soul and you are a rockstar. You're not actually a rock star, but that's what we say when people do something awesome. Because rock stars are awesome and we all want to be rock stars I guess. Good run! 

7. Make Apple Crisp. 

You will need:

4 Apples

1 cup of each of the following:

Steel Cut Oats 
Brown Sugar 

And some: 


Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Then slice, core, seed the apples and cut away anything reeeeeally gross if you are using old apples. Lay them out in an oven proof dish. Toss the rest of the stuff except for the cinnamon together in a bowl and then pour it over the apples. Slice up the butter and place it on top of the mix, evenly distributing the slices. It's going to melt, so NBD where you put it really but try to lay it out in even quadrants. Bake that thing for 45 minutes and then sprinkle cinnamon on top. Serve with Jeni's ice cream.  Jeni's ice cream is a reason to live. It's life changing. Jeni's should sponsor me too. 

8. Eat apple crisp and ice cream and plan a long run for tomorrow. A really long run. 

An Amazing Mexican Thing

This is my first entry in Run Cook Eat Repeat. I may write about running and I may write about cooking from time to time. In a perfect world, it would happen on a regular basis. I hope to go back and do a couple of introductory entries, but today I'm going to write about a recipe I made for lunch.

It's called, An Amazing Mexican Thing:

Let me first say that I'm not Mexican, nor do I profess that this dish is authentic in any way, actually it's more the exact opposite, but I tried to use some key ingredients that would give it a Mexican-esque flair. This meal also falls under the category of Things I Make with Stuff in the Fridge and Pantry, so feel free to substitute any of the ingredients for things you may have in your house. After all, you are likely more qualified to throw something together on the fly than I am.

I'm inspired by my friend Tora, who has a blog called Tora's Real Food, and by my friend Jamie, who cooks great meals for her family and unlike me, plans ahead (you should see the photos she takes. They will make your heart melt). Since I fall under the heading of Terrified Cook, I usually try to recall a successful recipe I've used and then change it up a bit when I'm making something up. My pastry chef friend Hannah told me once, there are no new recipes, just existing ones that chef's have tweaked to make their own. I proudly consider myself a tweaker.

For this recipe, I recalled a delicious squash and black bean enchilada recipe that Jamie had sent to me, and changed it up to make it into something new. This one is definitely most easily made as a casserole, though you could also do it as enchiladas if you are not as lazy as I am.

This recipe can be easily made vegetarian, gluten free, low fat and/or vegan if you wish. If you want to make the recipe vegan, consider using bigger tortillas and adding the rice inside, to make burritos instead (since you won't want to use the cheese topping described below).


Protein (cut up protein into really small pieces)
Vegetables (chop up veg into really small pieces) Advice: the dish holds together best if you use some kind of cooked squash or cooked refried beans or cooked lentils. Cook whichever of these that you have around the house first so you can just add it in later.
Jalapeño - diced (you can remove the seeds but I leave them in for more heat)
Onion - diced (a whole onion is good, but you can use more or less)
Garlic - 1 clove works just fine - it's Mexican, not Italian
Olive Oil - a splash
Black Beans - a can or if you have dried beans, soak and use 12 oz-ish.
Rotel - a can (or make your own using tomatoes, more jalapeño and salt)
Cumin - 1 t.
Chili Powder -  1/2 t.
Corn Tortillas (or Flour Tortillas but I think they are kind of BS)
Enchilada Sauce or Salsa Rojo or Verde (also can make your own) - a can or jar's worth should do
Shredded Cheese - a ton
Salt and Pepper - to taste
Love - as much as you can give

Side Dish Ingredients:

Rice (leftover or make ahead - I find rice to be time consuming and annoying to make during the meal but that 's because I'm a really elementary level cook so the more I can do ahead, the higher my sanity level remains)
Corn, black beans and/or green onion to add to rice
Salad greens
Tortilla Chips
Balsamic Vinegar

First pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees. Then sauté whatever protein and/or vegetables you are going to use and put aside for a moment. I used leftover squash, broccoli and carrots. Then sauté the onion, garlic, jalapeño in some olive oil for a few minutes. Add the black beans (drained if you are using a can), rotel, chili powder, cumin. Then add the protein and veg. Taste it and add salt and pepper to taste. It will NOT taste as spicy as it's going to get so don't worry if it tastes relatively mild.

In a dish, start w/ a splash of enchilada sauce or salsa. Then add a layer of tortillas, followed by a layer of the filling. Add another layer of tortillas, a tiny bit of sauce, a layer of filling, and repeat till you reach a inch below the dish or run out of tortillas or filling. Cover this mess with a bit more sauce and shredded cheese. Then use some more cheese. Adding more cheese means you love the people with whom you are sharing the meal.

Place it into the oven and let it cook for 20 minutes. Let it sit for a few minutes before serving. It will look like a gross mess of cheese, but when you cut it open, if you're careful, you can serve it on a plate showing each pretty layer with colorful vegetables layered between saucy corn tortillas. Serve with rice that you can add corn, more beans and/or green onions to while it's heating up. Finish off the rice with a squeeze of lime and add a few more green onion slices to the top. Add a salad with a small handful of tortilla chips crushed over it and balsamic vinegar and you're ready to go with a super low brow but delicious sort of Mexican meal!  

This dish will taste even better in 2 days, so if you can make it ahead, cool it on the counter, then cover tightly and put it in your fridge. Heat it back up for dinner later in the week and the jalapeño will have had time to heat up the deliciousness and then sauce will have had time to soak into the tortillas. It will be reminiscent of Mexican road stand enchiladas served in those square waxed cardboard containers. So good!
